Articulations of Desire seeks to understand the connections between democracy, as both a practical and conceptual political framework, and desire. Implicit in this broad investigation are philosophical questions the project tackles from multiple angles: how does desire interact with the formulation of collective will or the possibility of a collective democratic subject? What are the influences exerted by neoliberal capitalism on the flows of our desire? What possibilities does desire provide for thinking beyond liberal and individualistic models of democratic representation? To begin to answer these questions and enhance the project’s scope, AoD utilizes different research modalities, from individual research to public lectures and events. For public events, check out the “Desire + Capital” working group. There, the ESPhil-based organizing committee hosts events every three months focusing on themes from Marx’s mature work. Join us for some guest lectures, discussion sessions, and have some coffee and drinks as we deal with these substantive and emerging topics in political theory.

This project benefits from the generous support of the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship program and the infrastructural support of Erasmus School of Philosophy, Erasmus University Rotterdam.

“if desire is repressed, it is because every position of desire, no matter how small, is capable of calling into question the established order of a society…”

— Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Anti-Oedipus
